Vehicle Owner Details – Check License & Registration Details in India
The Ministry of Transport (MoRTH) has launched several online platforms to streamline vehicle registration and driving license services, including the mParivahan App, Parivahan online, and Vahan 4.0 portal. These platforms enable citizens to easily access information related to vehicle registration and vehicle ownership details via number plates and essential vehicle documents.
Through these portals, citizens can obtain information about driving licenses, vehicle registrations, vehicle owners by vehicle number, and other important documents. These initiatives aim to provide convenient and efficient vehicle management and ownership services.
How To Check Vehicle Owner Details?
There are primarily 3 methods to find out the name of the owner of any vehicle:
- Through the online portal of the Transport Department: Citizens can access this service by registering on the online portal of the Transport Department.
- Through the official application of the Transport Department (NextGen mParivahan): The NextGen mParivahan app allows users to obtain vehicle owner details conveniently.
- Through SMS: This information can also be obtained by sending an SMS to the designated number provided by the Transport Department.
These methods allow citizens to retrieve information about vehicle owners using government-provided platforms and services.
Through The Online Portal Of The Transport Department
To find out the name of the owner from a vehicle number using the Transport Department’s official website, follow these steps:
- Open the official website of the Transport Department in any browser on your mobile or desktop: https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/.
- The Transport Department homepage will appear.
- Click on the option “Informational Services” at the top of the menu bar.
- In the dropdown menu that appears, click on “Know Your Vehicle Details”.
These steps will guide you to the section where you can input the vehicle number and retrieve information about the vehicle, including details about the owner.
- A new page will open where you must log in using your mobile number. If you are a new user and have not registered on the transport portal yet, click the “Create Account” option.
- Visit the Vahan NR e-Services page.
- Enter your mobile number and email ID accurately and submit the OTP.
- Provide your name and password, then click the save button to complete the registration successfully.
- Log in using your mobile number and OTP.
- Upon logging in, navigate to the “RC Status” page.
- Enter the required details, such as Vehicle Number and Verification Code.
- Click the “Vahan Search” button to access details about the vehicle owner.
- View comprehensive information, including the RTO name, vehicle owner’s name, insurance details, and registration date.
You can also discover the owner’s name from a vehicle number by SMSing your mobile phone. Simply type ‘VAHAN‘ in the SMS box and send it to 07738299899. Within a short time, you will receive a message with comprehensive details, including the vehicle owner’s name and other related information. This convenient method lets you quickly access necessary vehicle ownership details directly on your mobile device.
Get Vehicle Details Through Mparivahan
- To begin, download the NextGen mParivahan App from the Play Store and complete the registration process to log in.
- Once logged in, the app interface will resemble the website.
- Navigate to the Informational Services section and select the RC search option below this menu.
- Enter your vehicle number to view the owner’s name and other details directly on your mobile screen.
Through SMS Service
- Open the SMS app on your mobile phone.
- Type VAHAN “Vehicle number” in the message box.
- EXAMPLE – VAHAN UP45U3456
- Send the message to 07738299899.
You will receive a reply with the vehicle owner’s name and other related details.”
Get RTO Vehicle Information
You can use the Know Your Vehicle Details service on the Transport Portal to retrieve information about any vehicle registered under an RTO. Follow these steps for the complete process:
- Visit the official website of the Transport Department.
- On the homepage, navigate to the Vehicle-Related Services section.
- Click on the Vehicle Registration option to proceed.
- Choose your state and RTO on the next page, then click Proceed.
- Navigate to Services at the top, and then select Additional Services below.
- Locate Know Your Vehicle Details in the menu below, and select this option.
- A new page will open where you must enter the vehicle’s registration, chassis, and engine numbers.
- Once entered, click Verify Details to proceed.
After completing these steps, your Vehicle Details will appear on your screen. You can also choose to print them if needed. The information displayed includes:
- Date of vehicle registration
- Chassis number
- Engine number
- Vehicle class
- Fuel type
- Model number
- Vehicle manufacturer’s name
- Vehicle fitness validity date
- Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate number
- Motor vehicle tax validity date
- Insurance details
- Vehicle emission standards
- Registration certificate status, and more.
Vehicle Number Details
The Vehicle Number Plate consists of 3 parts:
- State Code: The first two letters indicate the state or union territory (e.g., UP for Uttar Pradesh).
- District Code: The next two digits represent the district within the state, managed by the Regional Transport Office (RTO).
- Unique Number: The last part is a unique four-digit number for the vehicle, sometimes prefixed with a letter if needed.
For example, UP67Z5137 breaks down as follows:
- UP: Uttar Pradesh
- 67: Chandauli district
- Z5137: Unique vehicle number.
Using the Vehicle Number, you can also discover the owner’s name, check the RC (Registration Certificate) status, and obtain RTO vehicle information.”
